Letters from Delos W. Lake to his mother and brother Calvin H. Lake, posted from Dowagiac, Michigan, various camps in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Washington, D.C. One letter of September 1863 is written in verse. The collection also contains a letter to Calvin H. Lake from John A. Dunham of Co. G of the 19th Michigan Regiment, muster roll of Co. E of the 19th Regiment, 1863, August, and farewell addresses to the 2nd Brigade by Col. John Coburn and Daniel Huston. Lake's letters discuss military operations, including Battle of Thompsons Station and subsequent imprisonment by Bragg's Cavalry forces, operations at Cassville and Golgotha Church, siege and occupation of Atlanta, occupation of Goldsboro, North Carolina, advance on and occupation of Raleigh, and grand review in Washington, D.C.; commanding officers, including John Coburn, William Starke Rosecrans, and William Tecumseh Sherman; morale of the troops, war news; camp life (drills, payments, firearms, diseases, and hospitals, etc.).

Daniel D. Harkness papers

The Daniel D. Harkness papers primarily consist of diaries, military records, and photographs related to his service in the 1st Volunteer Cavalry, 34th Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Forces, and Forest Service. There are 189 photographs of the Philippines, Hawaii, Arkansas, Lake Arrowhead, New Mexico, and at sea. In addition, there is ephemera related to his time in Langres, France with the AEF. There is a folder with items related to John C. Couts and another related to Oscar N. Land. Other ephemera includes material related to the Roosevelt's Rough Riders Reunion in 1928. There is an oversize panoramic photograph of 604th Engineer Company D, C, and F Washington Barracks, D.C., August 1917. Note: This panoramic photograph is fragile.

Orderly book, 1761

The orderly book was kept by John Grant of Archibald McNeil's company in the 2nd Connecticut Regiment. Kept between June 20 and October 17, 1761, this orderly book pertains to the British occupation of Crown Point, N.Y. Also contains miscellaneous accounts, verses, and memoranda to 1801.

Daniel N. Speer papers

The largest portion of the collection consists of personal and military correspondence that Daniel N. Speer kept during his Civil War service. Also included are pieces of correspondence of John F. Moreland, his father-in-law, and documents dealing with family slaves. Speer's letters to his wife discuss the life in the Confederate Army, including the organization of the 4th Regiment of Georgia Infantry Battalion; the defenses of Skidaway Island and its evacuation; the organization of the 60th Regiment of Georgia Infantry; the Maryland campaign of 1862, including the battle of Antietam, the campaign in Virginia in the summer of 1863. The letters from Speer's wife and in-laws describe their life in LaGrange, Ga. Also included are a few letters by his brother John A. Speer. Speer's military correspondence includes letters, orders, and communications, both incoming and outgoing, that cover the period from July 7, 1861 to March 1865 and deal mostly with logistics and transportation.
