William J. Lilly letters to family

Five letters written by William J. Lilly in Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, to his cousins Lula E. Romney and Agnes L. Shelton in South Carolina. In the letters Lilly writes of his family's 480-acre farm and the success of their crops, of their expectations of selling mines, of Lilly's winter at Deadwood, of the difficulties in getting to the post office, and a brief history of his father's experiences since arriving in the United States. The majority of the content focuses on Lilly's interest in books, family discussions, and his affection for his cousins. Lilly's letters also include two poems on his family.

The collection consists of the material collected by Gary B. Cowles during his research on the original Busch Gardens in Pasadena, California. The collection is chiefly made up of 28 binders of research material that include newspaper clippings, copies of newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards, etc., all related to Busch Gardens, the Busch family and their Pasadena neighbors, Anheuser-Busch Company, and Pasadena history, as well as the gardener Robert Gordon Fraser. Also included: research notes, ephemera, tourism material, monographs, compact discs, slides, glass plate negatives, drawings, watercolors, and maps. Cataloger noted Cowles' orginal item numbers and all of Cowles' original notes were kept and help with photograph identification.

The collection contains three parts: 1) manuscripts by Hildegarde Flanner (11 poems, 1923-1924, and recollections of Olive Percival, 1983), 2) correspondence with author Olive Percival (120 letters, 1923-1944), and 3) letters to poet Ethel (Hamilton) Hinkle (52 letters, 1923-1953). The letters contain occasional references to her sister, author and journalist Janet Flanner, as well as to Harriet Monroe and other literary figures. Subject matter includes literary interests and personal affairs.

The collection contains research materials relating to English historian, poet, and politician Baron Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) collected by English professor Thomas Pinney. The majority consist of photocopies of letters by Macaulay spanning his lifetime. These may be photocopies of original letters, copies from microfilm, copies of published letters, transcriptions, or excerpts. Pinney's notecard index of Macaulay's correspondence reflects the majority of the chronologically sorted letters. There are also folders of unsorted letters and letters of indeterminate date. The series of correspondence by others consists of photocopies letters about Macaulay by family members and others, both during and after his lifetime. Other research materials include collected biographical materials, published articles about Macaulay, catalogue information about collections of Macaulay letters and notable people, copies of literary and business works by Macaulay, and copies or transcriptions of journals and memoirs about Macaulay by family members. Bound volumes include published works by Macaulay family members and a dissertation about Macaulay's literature. Oversize items include correspondence by Pinney as well as other printed material about Macaulay. The index of letters is an index prepared by Pinney on notecards. It is organized by date. The completeness of this index has not been verified. The microfilm series consists of four reels of microfilm.

The collection consists of the personal papers and correspondence of Margaret Collier Graham, as well as materials related to her husband, Donald McIntyre Graham, and other related family papers. Much of the subject matter in the collection focuses on life in California (chiefly in early Pasadena and Anaheim) and California real estate and development, including the establishment of Elsinore and Wildomar.
