Hotchkiss, Managing Editor, Editor and Editor-in-Chief between 1934 and 1958 were combined to form this collection of editorial background material. Includes documents on a wide range of topics of interest to the editorial staff. Much of it is correspondence and memoranda from Harry Chandler and includes his comments. The collection is arranged alphabetically by either correspondent or subject. Date range is 1905-1959; bulk of the material is dated 1930-1960.

Chandler, Otis

Otis Chandler (1927-2006) was the oldest son of Norman Chandler and Publisher from 1960-1980. Chandler attended Stanford and was an internationally-ranked shotputter. The fourth and final descendant of Harrison Gray Otis to run the Los Angeles Times, Chandler oversaw a major expansion of the paper, increasing its the profits and reputation. Date range is 1940-1989.

William "Bill" Thomas (1928-2014) was appointed by Otis Chandler to be the seventh executive editor of the Times in 1971 and stayed in that position until his retirement in 1989. He started at the Times in 1962 as an assistant city editor and the metropolitan editor. Includes correspondence, internal memoranda, policies, press releases, speeches, strategic plans, clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs. Date range is 1962-1993.

Baum, Jacob Files

This collection consists of correspondence and memoranda from Jacob Baum, Business Manager of the Los Angeles Times between 1920 and 1940. The correspondence mentions such topics as The Times's land holdings, the newspaper's advertising policies, presses for the fourth Los Angeles Times building, and condemnation of the third Los Angeles Times building. Some of the correspondence was sent directly to Harry Chandler and then forwarded to Baum for handling often with Chandler's comments and recommendations. The material is arranged alphabetically by either correspondent or subject. Date range is 1927-1932.
