    Speeches

    Manuscripts

5 items. Speech texts and cover letter or notes. Two drafts of a speech to the National Press Club, delivered on 10/27/1981, when NBW received the Fourth Estate award, plus attached note to "Lois" about them. The speech gave his audience an overview of the people and the thought behind LAT during his years with the paper. / Cover letter to Otis Chandler from NBW related to a speech given at "Laguna area Rotary" luncheon meeting, text also attached. The cover letter is dated 5/5/1981. The speech at Laguna Rotary was "The Care and Feeding of Publishers," outlining his experiences with various publishers during his long newspaper career. Because, as NBW. explained in his cover letter to Otis C., the audience was "a group of men (who) had two or more drinks at noon...", he used quite a bit of humor and banter. The speech features many drinking stories, some of them related to LAT staffers. The cover letter is also interesting as it provides NBW.'s thoughts on the rapid growth and economic, social and political changes in Orange County in the preceding years.
