Bonelli, William - Correspondence

Description

Approx. 10 items: In 1953, The Mirror exposed William Bonelli's Mafia connections and involvement in racketeering. In 1954, Bonelli, long-time member of the State Board of Equalization, authored a book, Billion Dollar Blackjack - the story of corruption and the Los Angeles Times. As the title suggests, this book was a strong condemnation of LAT and the Chandlers (publishers). Later Bonelli brought a lawsuit against The Mirror, another Chandler-owned newspaper, for "certain false published statements." This collection includes memos, letters, legal documents, press releases, etc. Also included is a complete copy of Los Angeles Underground (1954?), which reprinted the entire aforementioned book because, as the issue says, it was "suppressed in Los Angeles."

Magazine and newspaper clippings on various subjects: regular, same-day delivery of LAT to Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland in 1958; LAT editorial titled, "...Innuendo Not News"; LAT report on "sane elder citizens" being committed to State mental hospitals; complete issue of Time (mag.) for 7/15/1957, featuring cover story on the history of Los Angeles and The Times; second copy of same cover story clipped out; issue of Los Angeles Underground, with cover story titled, "Bonelli's 'Billion Dollar Blackjack - The story of corruption and the Los Angeles Times'"; etc. Issue of The Southland Almanac ((2/1954) in plastic sleeve (with card reading, "Article[s] about L.A.     Approximately 12 items. There is a 7-page typed review of Washington Irving's (Knickerbocker's) History of New York, which Bassett submitted as a radio script to Broadcast Music , Inc. (NY). Various business and personal letters are in the folder. There is a "Citation of Meritorious Service" that was awarded to Bassett by the American Legion "in recognition of his outstanding reporting for the Los Angeles Mirror..."
