Includes: in response to a comment in a column on nutrition, a Los Angeles woman warns, "My friends and I are planning to boycott your paper until (Dr. Stare's) column is removed"; exchange of letters with Jesse Robinson, Co-Chairman, Greater Los Angeles Urban Coalition, in which Robinson complains about lack of coverage of the Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade dinner to honor Muhammad Ali (1/15/1971); syndication of Lurie cartoons from the Ben Roth Agency; comics pages in general; a typical letter of the period alleging that the newspaper is "changing rapidly to a more liberal point of view"; letter from reader upset about the "Pentagon Papers" issue; the death penalty; letters congratulating Williams on his retirement; etc.

Jack Kent Cooke/Security First National Bank; Times Mirror Co. agreement with The State Poll, Inc.; exchange of letters between LAT and law enforcement and newspaper officials in Shreveport, Louisiana, related to incident in which a "Los Angeles Negro" (as the Shreveport newspaper referred to Anderson Bowman, Jr.), was arrested and convicted of drunk driving in Louisiana--the Shreveport newspaper and Dept. of Public Safety both took exception to an LAT story about the incidents; further examples of Williams lively wit in letter to Don Shannon in Tokyo; letter inquiring about subscribing to Science Service syndicate; New York U. Journalism Chair letter to W. asking his impression of the trend "by politicians, police and the general citizenry to blame the press for rioting and other problems," and W.'s reply; Martin Luther King, Jr.s, marches; etc.

Dept., Brigham Young U., who asked W. to "indicate your own background and how you've been able to advance in the profession [of journalism]"; Williams response to letter from mayor of San Dimas explaining LAT decision to close its Pomona office; Williams response to a Claremont Men's College professor who had written alleging "sensationalism" in LAT coverage; letter from an executive of Horton & Converse (pharmacies) claiming LAT had run a damaging article; letters of congratulations to both Williams and William Thomas on retirement and promotion respectively; LAT staffers Champlin and Seidenbaum on KCET's "Citywatchers"; etc.

Subjects include: W.'s memo on "tak(ing) The Times out of the business of reporting minor crimes and minor domestic disputes, including routine custody cases and divorces"; editorial telephone service; security - 2nd floor, Times building; Paris bureau rent; law suit brought by Bernard Tohl related to Lois Dwan column in Calendar which referred to his seafood eateries as "four poor (restaurants)'; exchange of letters between William Thomas of LAT and Nick Thimmesch of Newsday, arranging a meeting; newsmen missing in Cambodia; letter from "Minister of Public Relations" for the Church of Scientology, protesting the tone of a John Dart story in LAT; 2-pp. plan from Kelly Tunney for "on-the-street" researching of series of stories on arriving in L.A. without resources and how one gets by; permission to reprint a Charles Hillinger story on Nevada prostitution in True Detective; letter to William Thomas from U.S. Sen.
