Otis, Harrison Gray

General Harrison Gray Otis (1837-1917) was born in Ohio and moved west after fighting with the Union Army in the Civial War. In 1876, Otis moved his family to Santa Barbara, California, where he purchased the Santa Barbara Press. From 1889-1891, Otis was the special treasury agent for the Northern Seal Islands off Alaska. He became editor of the Los Angeles Daily Times in 1882 and purchased the paper in 1886. In 1898, Otis volunteered to serve in the Phillippine-American War, which is when he was appointed brigadier general. Otis remained publisher until his death. Date range is 1859-1979.
