Trumbo, Dalton
Manuscripts
Approx. 12 items: includes correspondence between entertainer and social critic Steve Allen and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. The letters begin with a controversy over an American Civil Liberties Union fundraising party to be held at the home of Trumbo. Steve Allen, an influential liberal in Hollywood, felt it was an inappropriate choice of location based on issues that are explained in his letters. As the correspondence stretches across May, June, July and into August, many sarcastic and humorous exchanges take place. It is not clear how copies of these letters came into the possession of James Bellows of LAT.
