Brown explaining why a speech he gave was severely condensed in LAT reportage (another letter to Brown on different topic, (1/21/1970); friendly note to Elmer Dills (of L.A. Herald-Examiner); response to Charles Ege (Porterville, CA) thanking him for highly complimentary letter to LAT--"we get a few letters like yours, but...the greatest majority of them tell us we're a bunch of bums..."; response to Superior Court Judge John Cole; (form) letters in defense of LAT's UN reporter Louis Fleming who, NBW writes, "does not express personal opinions in the Israeli-Arab conflict"; letters to J. Edward Murray of Arizona Republic; letter to Robert Barton (1/12/1970) of U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico; should LAT sponsor a "juried art show"?; incident involving LAPD officer and a shotgun (1/9/1970); attitude of Spiro Agnew (U.S. V. Pres.) toward LAT (1/9/1970); Oscar Acosta wishes to write a column for LAT as "spokesman for the Chicano" and NBW wishes to read examples (1/9/1970); letter to Police Chief Edward Davis (1/6/1970) on LAT coverage of police work in L.A.; (1/29/1970) minimum space requirements; letter (1/27/1970) to Herbert Klein, White House (Nixon) Communications Director assuring him that LAT reporter Jack Foisie did not "make critical comments casually"; further responses to readers critical of coverage of Agnew's Southeast Asia trip of 1970; Ralph Story's t-v program on Los Angeles; letter to Saul David (1/22/1970) expressing the view that, had JFK's assassin been a member of a left or right-wing organization instead of Oswald ("a nut") "hell would have broken loose"; problems with Metro coverage (1/22/1970); as always, complaints about cartoonists Conrad and Interlandi; as always, opinions pro and con about LAT comics pages; on form letter to be sent to "teachers praising Student Outlook," an LAT publication. (1/9) letter to Nora Kuttner providing her with information on past political endorsements by LAT--"the Times has never backed a Democratic candidate for President, [nor Governor]...but it has endorsed Democrats for every other elective job"--an offers his opinion that the paper had grown more liberal under Otis Chandler but that it was "centrist"; in the same letter he mentions that James Bassett had just begun the process of compiling a history of LAT; a number of letters from this month offer summations of NBW's political philosophy, i.e. to Lawson (1/18), to Kuttner (1/9), etc.; in 1/18 letter to "Colie," NBW writes that "Elizabeth [his wife] died January 11...I'm moving north, as we had planned to do...and will build on a bluff ...at Trinidad (CA); etc. It was at that time, with the move to Northern California, that NBW finally severed his direct ties to LAT.
