Chandler, Harry

Description

Harry Chandler (1864-1944) was born in New Hampshire and moved permanently to Los Angeles in 1885. He worked as a clerk in the circulation department of the Los Angeles Times, as well as delivering papers. He married Ruth Chandler in 1894, two years after his first wife died. Chandler continued to advance at the newspaper and in 1914, Harrison Gray Otis declared his plan to give Chandler and his wife full control fo the Los Angeles Times upon his death. Chandler was publisher of the Los Angeles times from 1917-1944. Intensely protective of his legacy, Chandler had much of his material destroyed upon his death. Series includes reference files, arranged alphabetically by author/subject. Facsimiles may not be copied or published. Date range is 1894-1979.

Norman attended Stanford, but returned home before graduating to assist his father at the Los Angeles Times. Norman and his wife, Dorothy Buffum Chandler, were also major supporters of the arts in Los Angeles. Series includes correspondence, invitations, speeches and other material, arranged alphabetically by author/subject. Facsimiles may not be copied or published. Date range is 1921-1973.

    Originally maintained as the Los Angeles Times History Center, the Los Angeles Times Records contains materials related to the business life of the Los Angeles Times and its owners - both corporate and personal. The business material is roughly organized by Times department; research material collected by the History Center to document the Times and materials related to the Otis/Chandler families are organized by subject. The records include accounting papers, legal documents, correspondence, directories, memoranda, reprints of articles, supplements to the newspaper, manuscripts, oral history transcripts, ephemera, newspapers, newspaper clippings, and objects. The collection includes a significant amount of audiovisual material, including photographs, film, and audio tapes. There are also several samples of printed newspapers that were collected by the Times History Center.
