Description: 2 items: two articles clipped from Antelope Valley Press, 7/9/1992, "Authors relate story of colorful Llano history," and "Authors chronicle [socialist] colony's battles." The articles relate the research and writing of a book, Bread and Hyacinths: the Rise and Fall of Utopian Los Angeles, including a desert community called "Llano," which Harrison Gray Otis is accused of trying to crush with his powerful influence.

Mr. Downing made it mandatory that all employees in his department subscribe to the newspaper at home. There are a number of very colorful memos written by him to staffers who wavered from his intense loyalty to the newspaper.
