Approx. 20 items. Material relates to a demand for retraction by Frank "One Eye" Dragna through his San Diego attorney, Rock Zaitzow. Certain pieces of information were provided, including "mug shots" of Dragna and some of his associates. Interoffice memos and notes from columnist Drew Pearson are in the file. In the end, the Times did print a correction stating that some claims in the article were found to be unsubstantiated. There was also a small number of items related to another complaint involving Abundavita Corp., actor Bob Cummings and right-winger Rev. Billy J. Hargis.

English (bookmaking raid); material defining and discussing libel; correspondence from Mae Murray; etc. Mae Murray correspondence removed from Autograph File and returned to Williams Subject files.

6 items. Letters, a report on journalism by W. addressed to UCLA Dept. of Journalism, a complete copy of California Sun Magazine. The article, "Coming: The Battle of the Times," is the reason the magazine was filed. Other subjects: W. letter to the Chair of the Journalism Dept. at UCLA, which produces above magazine, in which is critiques the article and suggests that there are inaccuracies in it. The article described the 1962 situation of newspaper publishing in L.A., and predicted events to come when the N.Y. Times began to challenge LAT with a West Coast Edition in Fall, 1962.

Approx. 15 items. During this time frame, LAT initiated a program of providing a publication titled Student Outlook to area high school students. It was a brief digest of news and current events. It was later proposed to expand this program into the elementary schools (5th and 6th grades). Other materials in the file include teacher evaluations of Student Outlook, and annual reports on LAT's Educational Services Dept. There is one memo (Gordon Phillips, 1964) on the Times Scholarship Program.
