An LAT story, 3/30/1973, gives the details of his apparent suicide - "Former Dist. Atty. Buron Fitts found shot to death at home" in Three Rivers, CA. Also an 8/8/1930 letter from Fitts to the "Fitts-for-Governor" Headquarters, reading in part, "I do not want to end this campaign heavily in debt...I am not financially able to assume the burden."
