Purchased with the Ellesmere collection from John Francis Granville Scroop Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere, through the agency of George D. Smith and Sotheby's of London, 1917. The collection was purchased by John Payne Collier. In 1853, he sold it to Francis Egerton, Viscount Brackley and 1st Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1857).
