- The collection consists of official copies of plays submitted for licensing between 1737 and 1824. Most of copies were written by professional copyists. Approximately 95 of the plays submitted were printed texts, either whole or partial. These have been cataloged individually and may be searched in the online catalog.

- Provenance
- Purchased with the Ellesmere collection from John Francis Granville Scroop Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere, through the agency of George D. Smith and Sotheby's of London, 1917. The collection was purchased by John Payne Collier. In 1853, he sold it to Francis Egerton, Viscount Brackley and 1st Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1857).
