Jeannette Carolyn Wilson photograph album of the Huntington Library, and other material

    Visual Materials

An album of about 200 photographs, 1942 to 1949, compiled by a former Huntington Library employee, Jeannette Carolyn Wilson, containing many snapshots of employees at the library and elsewhere. Subjects include: people standing outside the library; the tea room; aviary building; oak trees; employees playing cards and socializing; staff Christmas parties; snow on the grounds in January, 1949; women with cameras, taking photographs; and library staff loading books to be shipped offsite for safekeeping during World War II. The album also has some personal vacation photographs, a few clippings about the Huntington, and three letters from reference librarian Mary Isabel Fry, some with news of the Huntington. Wilson probably took many of the photographs, and possibly appears in the album. Though most people are unidentified, some recognizable library employees are: Carey Bliss, Leslie Bliss, Lyle H. Wright, Margaret Meracle, Robert Glass Cleland, Mary Isabel Fry, William Parish, Graydon Spalding, and Erwin F. Morkisch.

    Moore family papers, (bulk 1850-1930)

    Manuscripts

Boxes 1-3 contain correspondence, organized alphabetically by the last name of the sender. The correspondence contains letters sent to Rebecca Lash Miller by J. A. Heagy, her longtime suitor. The correspondence, dated between 1861 and 1865, describes the couples courtship, secret engagement, and break up. Heagy was studying to be a minister, and Miller's parents actively discouraged their relationship, possibly on the grounds that Miller possessed little wealth. The letters could be of use to a scholar interested in the culture of 19th-century courtship, perhaps particularly the interesting literary genre of the love-letter. Heagy's demonstrative and lengthy missives negotiate a fine balance between making love with paper and pen and confronting the practical, business side of marriage. The correspondence also includes letters from Maria N. James to Dr. John P. Moore, dated between 1869 and 1871. The correspondence between James and Moore is that of friends, though perhaps not strictly. James' letters betray her jealousy over Moore's time spent with mutual female friends in company, and James' laments that the two of them will never be more than friends. James works in secretarial positions, and often wishes she had more time to be sociable and be seen. Again, these letters might be of use to scholars interested in the history of 19th century courtship and love (though this was strictly flirtation, it is clear that James feels deeply for Moore).

William D. Kendall papers, (bulk 1861-1865)

    Manuscripts

The correspondence of William Devereaux and John Peter Kendall deals with their education at Bethel College and Philadelphia University, Kendall family history, and their American Civil War experience including military actions, relations with civilians, hospitals, and everyday activities of a fighting regiment. This portion of the collection also contains William Devereux Kendall's speech that is based on his reminiscences of the life of a Confederate soldier and describes trade between Confederate and Union soldiers. The letters also mention Hiram Kendall, an enslaved person who was taken to war by his enslavers, the Kendall family. The documents include indentures and deeds by Peter and Devereux Jarrett Kendall, records documenting William Devereux Kendall's military career, and a voter's registration issued to Devereux Jarrett Kendall in 1869. The collection also contains letters to and from Devereux Jarrett, William Devereaux, John Peter, and Courts Kendall; documents, photographs, newspaper clippings; as well as typewritten copies of late 17th and 18th century land and business records of the Courts family of Maryland, and family photographs.

    Hay family papers, (bulk 1862-1901)

    Manuscripts

The Hay family papers contain 176 items from 1862 to 1959; the collection includes personal and business letters, legal documents, as well as official documentation of Thomas Hay's pension. The first three folders contain letters from Thomas Hay to his family during the Civil War. The fourth and fifth folders focus on Elizabeth A. Hay's efforts to receive Thomas' pension after his death. The sixth folder deals with Thomas' affiliation with Freemasonry in both the United States and Chile. The seventh folder contains documentation regarding Elizabeth A. Hay's estate upon her death. The remaining eight folders cover broad aspects that are multi-generational, including correspondence, land deals, legal documents, California teaching record, ephemera, and a photograph album. Please note, since the Freemason documents were created within the institution, the date that is shown is the Anno Lucis amount, which began in 4000 B.C.E.; therefore, simply subtracting 4000 from the number shown reveals the more traditional date. Also included with the collection is the tin box that reads "Elizabeth A. Hay" which was used to store these family papers.
