Description: The manuscript, written by an unknown author, is a list of excerpts from Volumes 1-17 of Rymer's Faedera. The hand is consistent throughout the volume. The binding is Irish. Contemporary crimson morocco, the covers with three rectangular panels within one another, the outermost formed by a double line fillet with a lozenge-shaped floral ornament in each corner and floral ornaments repeated around the outside; the middle panel formed by a chain-roll, and the innermost by a narrow "thistle" roll bordered by a two-line fillet. The whole enclosing a floral center ornament built up with small stamps. Elaborate pale green continental endpapers decorated with birds, cupids, etc., in gold. Catalog description is included.

This Saville family tree on a parchment roll was prepared by William Dugdale, Norroy King of Arms. There is some damage to the parchment and, sometime prior to 1967, modern wooden boards were glued to the top and bottom of the roll.

Artist's Assortment of Fine Crayons

Visual Materials

One boxed set of color pencils entitled Artist's Assortment of Fine Crayons; the subtitle reads: "In 12 Colors, No. 663, Eberhard Faber; The Lead Used in These Crayons is Carefully Prepared from the Finest Pigments," ca. 1906. The box is divided into a top half which slides off and a bottom half upon which is an image of a windmill by a canal. The side reads "Box Pat. May 15, 1906" and in penciled block print "Eberhard." On the reverse of the box is a listing of colors with corresponding numbers. These are: 6629 Black; 6624 Purple; 6625 Blue; 6628 Green, Dark; 6618 Green, Light; 6615 Blue, Light; 6627 Yellow; 6622 Orange; 6620 Pink; 6626 Red; 6617 Crimson; 6623 Brown. Eleven of the original 12 crayon pencils remain--only #6617, Crimson, is missing.

The Dickinson & Shrewsbury records contain personal and business correspondence related to Dickinson & Shrewsbury salt mine company, their business and legal records, and files related to the enslaved labor that the company used in their salt mines including the family of Booker T. Washington, who were enslaved by the Ruffner family. The correspondence series, 1799 to 1880, is mostly between prominent company members and family members. The business files series, 1801 to 1857, are made up of financial accounts for the company. The enslaved labor files, 1806 to 1863, contain a variety of documents related to the enslaved people the company "hired out" from other enslavers to work at the salt mines. Many of the documents of the collection are the result of the dissolution of the company and the many lawsuits that were brought about near the end of the company. The topic of the enslaved people the company used is present in each series. The records also relate to several other companies in the same region such as Joel Shrewsbury & Company, and Dickinsons & Shrewsbury. There are also two maps, 1838 and undated.

The collection consists of manuscripts gathered by Los Angeles collector Grant Jackson which chiefly relate to California and the history of California. Of note in the collection are materials by John A. Sutter, Pío Pico, José Maria Covarrubias, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, and William Wallace Brier. There is a group of letters and the logbook of the schooner "D.B. Keeler" by William S. Emery. It includes the business papers of the Lompoc Valley Land Co., three documents related to enslaved people in Kentucky and Missouri, and a Seminole Indian blood roll dated 1896. The collection also contains twelve maps for the period 1870 to 1880.
