  The history of Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company

  Manuscripts

  This manuscript covers the entire history of Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company, which began as the Baker & Hamilton Company, founded by Livingston Low Baker and Robert Muirhead Hamilton, two men who came to California in 1849 to mine for gold, but who eventually gave up mining to open a hardware store in Sacramento. Baker & Hamilton also sold farming supplies and equipment. They opened a second store in San Francisco in 1867, which was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. In 1918, Baker & Hamilton merged with Pacific Hardware & Steel Company to create Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company. The author also discusses the history of agriculture in California and the agriculturist James L. L. F. Warren.

  A series of 27 photographs of scenes along the Northern Pacific Railroad's Pend d'Oreille Division and Clark's Fork Division in Oregon, as well as scenes on the lines of the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. along the Columbia River. Included are views of the workers along the line, a survey team, the camp tents holding the hospital, camp mess tents, a druggist, and a blacksmith shop.   L. Benedict diary of a trip to California and the Pacific Northwest

  Manuscripts

  In the diary, Benedict describes his travels by train through the American West and Canada. He begins in Chicago, travels to San Diego, then heads north along the Pacific Coast to Victoria and Vancouver in British Columbia, and finally travels through Canada back to Ontario. Benedict talks about the different regions he passes through and the various scenic attractions, and the populations found in western cities, including Chinese districts and Mormons in Salt Lake City. He also makes comments on the large numbers of gold seekers in San Francisco, Portland, and Tacoma, waiting to depart for the Klondike gold rush. Loose in the diary are three items including notes, Benedict's business card, and a promotional booklet for Riverside, California entitled "The Greatest Orange Growing City in the World."
