Henry Raup Wagner scrapbook

Wagner's scrapbook contains notes and document facsimiles for his various publications on New Mexico printing (the majority of them were for his article published in 1937). The facsimiles are of official announcements by New Mexico governors Manuel Armijo and Francisco Sarracino, and copies of the newspaper Sante Fe Republican. There are also facsimiles of items printed by Father Antonio Jose Martinez, an early printer in New Mexico. The scrapbook also contains several letters between Wagner and other historians and writers regarding New Mexico printing and history including Edward Eberstadt, Herbert O. Brayer, and Lansing Bloom. The documents are in English and Spanish.

The collection contains over three hundred folders of correspondence that are arranged alphabetically by correspondent in fifty-eight boxes. The collection ranges from 1878 to 1972, with the bulk of the correspondence being from the years 1900 to 1979. The correspondence includes letters, telegrams, postcards, photographs and one record disc (box 26). The correspondence is mainly related to the library collection itself or to the library as an institution. The letters include commentary on the collection, the acquisition and transfer of items, inquiries about the holdings of the library, letters of thanks and congratulations from visitors, financial transactions, and letters between members of the staff. Box 52 contains miscellaneous files labeled as crank files which are often unsolicited.

The research material includes the material that Read and Gaines collected for their publication of the Bruff journal. The majority of it is arranged alphabetically by topic. This series is made up mostly of research notes by Read and Gaines. The research material also includes copies of the book's acknowledgement, bibliography, introduction, and index as well as Read and Gaines' correspondence with Columbia University Press. There are a few folders of material organized by type: miscellaneous notes (4 folders) and research notebooks (7 items, one of which is in oversize). Correspondence by Read and Gaines are mostly their retained, unsigned, copies. The correspondence is chiefly letters written between them and research libraries or other scholars to obtain information for or to obtain permission to publish material in their book. Notable participants are: Herbert Eugene Bolton, Frederick Coykendall, Edward Eberstadt, Francis Farquhar, Max Farrand, Frederick Webb Hodge, C.
