Articles of Incorporation for The Wiley Gold Mining Company
Manuscripts
This collection is divided into two main parts, both arranged chronologically: Documents and Correspondence. Both series relate to the Wiley Gold Mining Company. James Thompson's name or signature appears on a majority of the documents. The documents include stock certificates, indentures, mining claim agreements, certificates of location and labor, company by-laws, warranty deeds, and receipts between various members of the company, and they are drawn in Lida, Nevada; Kansas City, Missouri; and Phoenix, Arizona. With documents that contain more than one date, the date of signature is used in cataloging. The correspondence includes business letters between employees of the company, as well as letters from officers of the company to potential investors. Several of the letters also include bills for supplies, expenses, and labor. The correspondence contains letters from Big Pine, California; Kansas City, Missouri; Lida, Nevada; and Phoenix, Arizona. There are also two folders of ephemera, one containing two printed sketch maps of Nevada and one containing various printed material such as newsletters and pamphlets related to the Wiley Gold Mining Company and to other mining companies in the area. The latter folder also contains a blank "Articles of Incorporation" form.

Mining stock certificates
Manuscripts
The collection consists of a variety of stock certificates, notarized mining documents, meeting minutes and resolutions, a returns ledger, business correspondence relating to the daily business of the company, a certificate of widowhood from the Fraternal Order of Masons, and two pieces of personal correspondence relating to S.A. Shepperd's military service. They give a good picture of the operation of a small-time mining venture and the holdings of a Denver businessman (Shepperd) during the Colorado mining boom years. Shepperd's correspondence with miners and other capitalists, as well as the documents relating to his business deals with mining companies in Nevada and New Mexico, attest to the networks of capital that linked Colorado silver mining to other mining boom districts and other industries. Many of Shepperd's documents are penned on the letterhead of the Denver & Rio Grande/Atchison, Topeka, and Sante Fe Railroad, much of which includes promotional copy advertising the railroad's tourist routes.
