Description: Two autograph letters written by Dr. Nathan H. Rappaport to Ruth Proskauer Smith, an American advocate for reproductive rights. The letters were written just after his release from prison and detail Dr. Rappaport's work and his vow to continue regardless of possible future incarceration; he also advises how to advocate and thanks her for the literature Mrs. Smith has sent him.

Charles H. Bilke letter

The letter, which Bilke wrote to the Evans Brothers in Virginia City, Nevada, talks about employment opportunities, or the lack of employment opportunities in Butte, Montana, as well as the availability of work in Salt Lake City, Utah and Nevada. Bilke advises his friends to stay in Nevada and not to come to Montana.

W.P. (William P.) Reynolds letters to Edward J. Reynolds

Manuscripts

W.P. Reynolds advises Edward Reynolds to stay in Boston to continue his studies, but Edward is welcome to join him in Mexico later in the year. W.P., who appears to be Edward's elder brother, also offers advice on other topics (i.e. "Urbanity and politeness are weapons in the hands of a man of tact"). HM 4210 is dated July 3, and HM 4211 is dated August 4. Both letters were written in San Francisco, California, and both are addressed "Dear Eddie."

Autograph letter written by Lou H. Blackmer to Julia E. Smith, 13 August 1877, in National City, California. In part: "...I love and honor you for the brave stand you have taken. Do you not sometimes weary in the conflict for rights that are ours? I do and not only weary, but become thorougly heartsick at the injustice heaped upon our sex. My husband is a firm woman suffragist, which gives me strength..."

Francis Rawdon-Hastings, Marquess of Hastings letters

Manuscripts

These letters were written to the Scottish advocate and Tory politician Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, and his son Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville. The first four letters were written from London (to Henry Dundas) and deal with personal things as well as finding a position for a friend, etc. The last three letters were written from Calcutta (to Robert Dundas) and deal with the East India Company, Great Britain's interests in India, as well as British politicians in Calcutta. The other item is a list of pensions Hastings recommended to the "Lord Advocate."
