Description: An Elizabethan manuscript survey which records the Norfolk fenland estates of Thomas Hunston of Walpole; the survey is written in English on parchment in John Hexham's secretary hand. The survey records, in detail, Hunston's lands in Walpole, Walton, Walsoken, Emneth, and Well, noting boundaries, field and path names, and includes details of tenants and neighbors. The volume has interleaved blank pages, possibly added in the 18th century, and on the bottom of the first blank page, a colored 16th century coat of arms initialed H. C.; in addition, there is the small 20th century book label of "Peter A. Crofts." The binding is 18th century calf gilt, rebacked and recornered with endpapers created from old paper.

This manuscript copy of Tyndale's 1530 work, was written in England and is in an unknown hand; it was copied from a mnuscript "written out in anno 1565 by my brother Wm W" from the 1548 printing at London by Antony Scoloker and William Seres. The names "Cranmer Kerrick" and "H.K. Bowney 1807" are written on the first flyleaf and tipped into the front is a 3-page extract of a letter from Archdeacon Bowney (of Northamptonshire) to W.N. Cartwright (1843, Oct. 16) and a compliments slip from Bowney to Cartwright (1843, Oct. 17) is laid in as well. The volume is bound in brown sprinkled calf with gilt border (18th century); it is rebacked and repaired at corners but the spine has significant damage and covers are loose.

Manuscripts

The collection consists of a small number of manuscripts, mainly dealing with religious or family subjects; the bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence between the Stutterd family members, mainly John, Thomas and his wife, Mary, and Jabez. The collection is a rich source of information about the social, economic, and religious worlds of a lower middle class extended family in the Midlands and North of England in the later 18th and early 19th centuries. There is a large group of letters to and from various Baptist ministers and church leaders, discussing church and doctrinal matters; there is also a significant group of letters dealing with the wool and woolen goods business. The Stutterd family letters are also an excellent source for subjects relating to the medical issues of the 18th century in Northern England; especially smallpox, childbirth and infant mortality, and the many and various ways people died during this time.
