Pacific Electric Railway Training Film, 1914

Pacific Electric Railway film made 1913-1914 to instruct trainmen in operating interurban trains. Opening titles read: "The right and wrong procedures are illustrated throughout." Shows an automobile coming to a train crossing, with a train coming, and the "automatic flagman" is not working; trainmen filling out train orders; train approaching a man walking on trestle; people getting on and off train. Shows train at the San Gabriel River; the Glendale line train going down the tracks, other footage. Format of original: Reel

Rare Books
This collection consists chiefly of magazines containing the first appearances of works by American author Jack London. The collection includes 130 periodicals with London's short stories, serialized versions of his novels, and essays, with the bulk dating from the late 1890s to the 1910s. In addition, there are 20 pieces of ephemera and miscellaneous printed items about London's work and life, including materials prepared by London enthusiasts through the 1970s. The items were compiled by Donald French, a collector of Jack London materials in Northern California. Periodicals: Most of the periodicals contain the first appearances in print of stories by London, and the earliest item in this collection is the September 1897 issue of The Owl containing the story "Two Gold Bricks," followed by 1899 issues of Overland Monthly and The Black Cat. More than thirty periodical titles are represented including Century,Cosmopolitan, McClure's Magazine,Overland Monthly,The Saturday Evening Post, and the Youth's Companion. There are also essays about socialism by London in The Comrade: An Illustrated Socialist Monthly,The Independent, and The International Socialist Review. In addition, there are some writings about London, including biographical writings by London's second wife Charmian London in The Century (1921) and Rose Wilder Lane in Sunset (1917). Ephemera: The 20 pieces of ephemera include pamphlets and printed material related to London's life and work that were primarily produced by London enthusiasts, dating from 1901 to 1976, including a United Artists movie poster for the 1943 film "Jack London" and some later publications of his work, such as a 1951 comic book version of The Sea Wolf.

(John Benjamin) Sanborn, and Superintendent for Indian Affairs for the Central Superintendency Thomas Murphy as "Commissioners to negotiate a treaty or treaties, under instructions of the Secretary of Interior, with the Comanche, Kiowa, Arrapahoe [Arapaho] and Apache Indians, who have agreed to meet at Bluff Creek below the mouth of the Little Arkansas River, on the fourth day of October next, to enter into a treaty of peace with the United States." Motion picture film of Sonya Levien and friends, ca. 1935 - ca. 1959. There is an unedited master film reel, edited copy, a VHS videotape copy for circulation, and a digital copy. The following information was supplied by Tamara Hovey Gold, May 1993. The following is clarification of some shots which may be obscure on the film: 001,2 Tony Luhan -- Pueblo Indian chief whom Mabel Dodge Luhan married. 002,1 Tony Luhan. 003,1 Mary Binney and Spud Johnson -- Mabel Dodge Luhan's friends. 033,4 Angelino -- lived with Frieda Lawrence after D.H. (David Herbert) Lawrence's death. 007,1 Tamara, Tissie Bok (sister of Derek Bok, President of Harvard), Sophie Huxley. 077,5 Tamara and Richard Buhlig. Buhlig, concert pianist and teacher and friend of Schoenberg's. Andreis Deinum -- documentary film-maker. Frank Waters -- novelist, wrote many books on Indians, lives in Taos. 009,1 Buhlig -- Dr. Fischer (friend) -- Schoenberg. 011,2 Error in title - not Erika Mann but Elizabeth Meyers (friend). Erika Mann, correctly titled, is in next shot in the chaise lounge. 011,5 Schoenberg and son Rudy. 012,0 Daughter Nuria - became Mrs. Luigi Nono. 012,4 Donan Jeffers. 012,0 Garth Jeffers. 015,1 Matthew Huxley. 015,5 Angelino and group. (The Prague section shows students from other countries volunteering in rebuilding of Lidice which had been razed by the Nazis and its population murdered.) Dorothy Brett - daughter of Vicomte Esher - ran away from home to study art at Slade School ... then followed D.H. (David Herbert) Lawrence to the U.S. where she typed his manuscripts and painted. Her portrait of Lawrence hangs in National Portrait Gallery in London. The Big House - is Mabel's in Taos.
