Edwin Dickens letter to John Dickens

Letter is written by "Edwin Dickens of California" to his uncle John Dickens in England. The letter is written from "Washington, South Yuba" which is in Nevada County. Dickens writes an account of his journey to California and comments on Salt Lake City and Mormons, and about how he went to "North West of California" to mine gold. Letter is sewn into and glued on other sheets of paper, which make covers.

The letter is written on Patriotic letterhead showing a Union soldier holding a bayonet, in a camp with tents, three American flags, and the United States Capitol Building in the back.

This collection contains photographs by commercial photographers dated ca. 1890-1910 that show images of recreational scenes on Catalina Island, a hotel and public parks in Southern California, and various historical sites in Mexico City. Photographs of Catalina Island include views of Avalon, Sugarloaf Point, sailboats and glass-bottom boats, steamships, bathers at the beach, a tent city, and sailors of the steamship the "San Diego". California views include Missions San Gabriel, San Fernando, and San Juan Capistrano; the Coronado Hotel in San Diego; Central Park, St. James Park, and Hollenbeck Park (all based in Los Angeles); Adams Street in Los Angeles; the Shakespearean actress Helena Modjeska's home in Orange County; and an interior view of Columbia Savings Bank's then president Aaron M. Ozum's residence at 3131 Figueroa Street, Los Angeles. Photographs of Mexico depict the Cathedral de Mexico, Paseo de la Reforma, interiors and exteriors of Castillo de Chapultepec, Hotel Iturbide, Mercado Volador, Canal de la Viga, the daily lives of Mexican citizens, the Zócalo (now known as the Plaza de la Constitución), and various street scenes. Miscellaneous photographs are of cargo ships at shipping docks possibly in San Francisco, a steamship, and gardens. C.B. Waite photographed 19 of the 114 prints in this collection. Other photographers who contributed to this collection are Charles F. Ironmonger, Frank L. Park, Percy Cox and R.J. Carmichael, J.C. Hatton, Noren F. Swenson, and the Special View Company. Two photographers were identified on some photographs only by their surname: Graham and Scott.

Edwin Eells autobiography

HM 80829: Autobiography of Edwin Eells, Book I (copy). This notebook appears to have been copied from Edwin's original diary and the remainder of the volumes were edited by his daughter, Ida Myra Eells (b. 1872) using his original accounts, now apparently lost. Eells begins his autobiography by mentioning the gift of a pocket diary from his father, Cushing Eells, and states that it has helped him to recall events from his past. Following his introduction, as a backdrop, is a history of Dr. Marcus Whitman's visits to the Nez Perce people in the early 1830s. This provides an explanation of how his father came to the territory in 1838. Eells recalls a monotonous early life. He had fond memories of horseback riding and yearly trips to Walla Walla County, Washington. During the family's absence, "...we left our houses in the care of the Indians, who were faithful and honest, and nothing was lost" (p. 17). He provides lengthy accounts, which include how they built their settlement, changes in the Mission of the American Board, "The Great Migration of 1843", the harsh winter at Tshimakain of 1846-1847, and how Whitman was eventually massacred by the Indians on November 29, 1847. Eells cautions that the subject of the Whitman killings was the topic of fireside conversation by others as he was too young to understand at the time.
