Description: Printed form, filled in by hand, by the Assay Office and Gold and Silver Refinery of E. Justh, in San Francisco, for a deposit of gold bullion by Charles Theodore Hart Palmer and Wells, Fargo & Company. The weight of the gold after melting was 134.44 ounces with a value of $2,512.32.

Manuscripts

This collection consists of an autograph album containing handwritten notes, letters, poems, and drawings by approximately 200 friends and acquaintances of American author Charles Warren Stoddard, including leading American literary figures, journalists, poets, critics, politicians, and actors of the late 19th century. Among the many notable contributors are Samuel Clemens, Bret Harte, and Joaquin Miller. The earliest item in the book is an 1863 dedication by Thomas Starr King, and continues with contributions primarily from members of San Francisco literary society beginning in the mid-to-late 1860s through the late 1890s, as well as from friends in other locales where Stoddard lived or traveled including Louisville, Kentucky; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts; New York; and Hawaii. A letter from L.C. Bayles (page 23) introduces lines of verse with the note "in accordance with your request," reflecting Stoddard's curation of the album as a compendium of verse and personal sentiments tailored towards friendships and literary musings. The volume includes two photographs of groups of men and women, captioned, "Riverdale, N.Y., July 4th 1890" (page 116). The contents are handwritten on blank pages in an "Album" published by Leavitt & Allen, consisting of 241 pages including an engraved title page and frontispiece and [8] other engraved plates with illustrations by Creswick, W.H. Wells, Fargo & Company Express to Orion H. Burke

Manuscripts

The collection, which contains 10,844 items, consists of correspondence, letter books, manuscripts, speeches, diaries, account books, published articles, legal papers, financial statements and business records. The 10,528 pieces of correspondence are chiefly addressed to James De Barth Shorb, James M. Tiernan and Maria de Jesus Wilson Shorb. The 17 letter books are related to the business and financial affairs of Shorb and Benjamin Davis Wilson. The 75 manuscripts consist of items chiefly written by Shorb and Wilson family members. The 224 items in the Business Papers include material related to Shorb's many companies including the San Gabriel Wine Company. The following subjects are covered in the Shorb collection: the Shorb, Wilson, and Patton families, David Jacks, Mariano Vallejo, Santa Catalina Island, the Mount Wilson Observatory, California government and politics, African Americans and the Chinese in California, agriculture, the citrus fruit industry, Indians of California, irrigation, lend tenure, mining, railroads, ranching, water rights, and the wine industry. The collection also documents the history and development of the following California cities: Alhambra, Elsinore, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Ramona, San Gabriel, San Marino, and Wilmington.

Letters and receipts relating to Wells, Fargo & Company

Manuscripts

Letters and receipts either relating to or sent by Wells, Fargo & Company from 1854-1892. Consists of four letters, including a letter to Nat Stein from Marshall Cushing through D.S. Richardson requesting Stein's reminiscences of Wells Fargo for a book project (1892) and a letter to Stein from Joseph S. Roberson telling him of Indian troubles with the Overland Stage Line near Julenburg and $30,000 in losses recently sustained in lost mail. Also includes 15 money order receipts sent by J.L. Martel, L.A. Garnett, H.R. Linderman, E.W. Worsham, and Elizabeth Menzies, on letterheads from Wells Fargo, Adams and Co., and Swamp Land District No.160.

The collection consists mainly of letters to and from Hosmer B. (Buckingham) Parsons (1846-1908), who joined Wells, Fargo & Company in 1867 and successively held the positions of cashier, assistant secretary, vice-president, and president of the company bank in New York. The papers deal chiefly with the express business: relationships with competing express companies such as American Express, Pacific Express, Northern Pacific Express, Texas Express, etc.; with railroad companies including Northern Pacific Railroad Company, Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company, Kansas City, St. Joseph & Council Bluffs Railroad Company, and others; as well as matters of shipments, rates, and routes. There are also papers that relate to the personal business affairs of Hosmer B. Parsons.Includes original letters, press copies and press copy letter books, and duplicated copies of letters. Persons represented by 50 letters or more: Hancock, W. J. (325 pieces) Parsons, Hosmer B.
