Walter Scribner Schuyler letters

These six letters document aspects of Lieutenant Schuyler's service on the Northern Great Plains in 1870-1871 (Wyoming and Nebraska), followed by his involvement in the 1877 campaign that brought the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877 to a conclusion. Schuyler mentions: George Crook, Thomas Duncan, John Gregory Bourke, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Spotted Tail. The letters were written to Schuyler's father, mother and Albert C. Snyder. There is also a receipt and five newspaper clippings.

James St. Aubyn journal

The journal is bound in leather covers which have become damaged and fragile; it is marked 'Vol. 1' on the title page. The journal is a record of St. Aubyn's life of attending the theater, hunting and horse racing, attending balls, conducting love affairs and travelling throughout England in pursuit of these activities.

The drawings, which artist James D. Hutton prepared while with U.S. Army Captain W. F. Raynolds' expedition of the Yellowstone River Valley in 1859-1860, include landscape scenes throughout Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming, including Bear Butte, the Bighorn River and Mountain Range, the Little Missouri River, the Powder River, the Teton Range, the Wind River, and various locations in the Yellowstone River Valley. There is one drawing not from the expedition, and it is of Cabo Blanco, Costa Rica. It was probably drawn in 1847, and has on its verso: "W R Hutton" and a New York City address. Also included is a photostat of a daguerreotype of James D. Hutton (FAC 1402).

James Milo Alexander papers

The collection consists primarily of material from both James Milo Alexander and John Hanks Alexander. There are various pieces of correspondence such as letters to family members and a letter designating Stevedore Cantonment in Virgina as Camp Alexander (1918) in John Hanks Alexander's honor. James Milo Alexander is represented by several items including: Two account books (1862-1865), various certificates including a permit to carry arms for home defense (1865), a marriage certificate after emancipation (1866), a birth notice for his daughter, Glenn A. Alexander (1856), and a small photograph. The collection also contains a few pieces of printed matter including an announcement for a meeting to celebrate the ratification of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution (1870) and a newspaper clipping from 1939. There is an itinerary written by John Hanks Alexander of the march of "M" Troop, 9th Cavalry from Fort Washakie, Wyoming to Fort DuChesne, Utah (1888). The collection also contains a few letters to to Titus Alexander, brother of John Hanks Alexander
