Certificates granting Indians permission to marry in Puebla, Mexico

Description: This collection consists of five ecclesiastical marriage investigation records for Native American marriages in what is now the Mexican state of Puebla. The investigations took place in 1786 and 1787. They record standard canonical procedures for assuring the legitimacy of marriages; each document notes that has followed the dictates of the Council of Trent. Auxiliary priests of the parish priest called "tenientes" conduct three of the investigations. Ignacio Mariano de Vasconcellos, a lawyer of the college of San Pablo at Puebla, ecclesiastical judge, and priest, presides over two of the investigations. He was an important cleric in Puebla and from the distinguished Montserrate family.

The chronologically-arranged documents demonstrate the range of legal, administrative, ecclesiastical, military, and genealogical records initiated by government representatives, lawyers, litigants, clerics, and laypersons from the late sixteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. The bulk of the records are legal and contractual, including wills, testimonies, inheritance cases, power of attorney contracts, and financial agreements between individuals and/or institutions. Administrative and ecclesiastical records mostly include appoiintments to secular and religious offices as well as some Inquisition and genealogical documents. Military records document pensions, compensations, and other payments made by the Royal Treasury to former military officers. Prominent persons and places of colonial and national Mexico and Guatemala are represented in the collection, such as Juan Francisco de Güemes y Horcasitas, first count of Revillagigedo and viceroy of New Spain from 1746-1755; Juan Nazario Peimbert, lawyer who proposed the formation of an Indian army in the event of a French invasion in 1809; and Juan Antonio de Vizarrón, Archbishop of Mexico and Viceroy of New Spain from 1734-1740.

These three albums depict a lengthy excursion taken by Czarine Boxall in 1945 to Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tehucacán, Orizaba, Córdoba, Fortín de las Flores, Cuernavaca, Taxco, Morelia, Pátzcuaro, Guadalajara and Mazatlán, as documented by snapshots, captioned postcards and the compiler's own typewritten account, which is bound in with the pages of photographs and snapshots. Each of the three volumes contains extensive commentary about her trip as incorporated by Ms. Boxall on typewritten sheets of paper bound in with the images. The albums are each marked "Mexico" on the front cover.

Biography and certificates for Alonzo Orson Perry

Collection of items related to Alonzo Orson Perry and Mormon history. Includes a biography of Perry by Almeda Perry Brown, a family history of his wife Ann Janette Stowell Perry (1849-1912), a mission certificate signed by Brigham Young (1876), a certificate of his residence at Mill Ward in the Uintah Stake (1899), a copy of a certificate of his ordination as high priest (1907), Also includes a printed pamphlet of a revelation given through John Taylor relating to George Teasdale and Heber J. Grant and copies of two photographs of Egyptian papyrus reputed to be Joseph Smith's Book of Abraham.

Manuscripts

Documents confirming property rights and holdings in the state of Sonora by Mexican or Spanish royal officials. Most documents concern the Gutierrez family, of San Miguel de Horcasitas and owners of the Rancho San Marcial in Sonora, which may suggest that they collected the documents as a legal record of their property ownership. The documents bear royal or state stamps that establish their bona fide nature. Some documents clearly state that they are copies taken from the originals. The documents are in Spanish.
