    This collection consists of letters and documents related to the life and interests of Henry H. Markham. These papers deal mainly with the politics of the late 1800s, but include many from his files, dealing with mining and his other business interests. Subjects include: political trends in California, the California gubernatorial campaign of 1890, the 1896 election of President McKinley, and mining in California and Arizona (including some deeds of mining claims and reports). Persons represented in the collection include: Charles Frederick Holder (6 pieces), Henry Harrison Markham (84 pieces), Harrison Gray Otis (20 pieces) and Lorenzo Sawyer (1 piece).     James Judson Jerome letters

    Manuscripts

    The letters are written to Jerome by his sister Clara and brother Sylvester. The first, written by his sister Clara from a ranch in Watsonville, California in 1915, is about the death of his niece Jennie. Clara talks a little about her life in California. The second letter, written by his brother Sylvester from Uncasville, Connecticut in 1916, is a sympathy letter to James whose wife had just died.

    W. H. Webber Chinese exclusion notebook

    Manuscripts

    This directory, compiled and used by immigration inspector W. H. Webber, is comprised of pasted-in clippings from San Francisco's Chinatown directories published by Horn Hong & Co., as well as handwritten lists by Webber, of residents living in Chinatown. The entries are dated by year and arranged by street name, though the entries are not in true chronological order. The earliest entries are dated 1883, the first year of enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the last entries are dated 1916.

    Jerome B. Chaffee letter to Alphonso Taft

    Manuscripts

    Chaffee requests the appointment of Judge Decker to the position of United States District Attorney for Colorado, and gives his support. Decker is named "William" in the letter. There is also a brief endorsement of Decker signed by James B. Belford. Includes two-piece printed clipping with short biography of Chaffee, and one with a biography of Westbrook S. Decker.
