- Essay by Jack Davis (died 1979) describing the life and work of French electrical engineer Georges Leclanché (1839-1882). The fourteen-page typescript chiefly concerns the technical and commercial development of the Leclanché cell , including its patenting and significance, particularly in light of the rising importance of the telephone in the 1870s and 1880s. The essay also discusses Leclanché's childhood, education, and early career as an electrochemical researcher, and Leclanché's other achievements, including a design for the extraction of lead from its ores; work on the hydrogen spectrum; and patents for the recovery of silver and gold from photographic residues, for an air chronometer, and for applying electricity to lighting. Also includes letter of transmittal to and acknowledgment from Bern Dibner, dated 1966, December 5 and December 9.
