Caroline Corry commonplace book

A Victorian era commonplace book containing poems, drawings, and locks of hair. The original poems include an acrostic of Caroline Corry's name and "Lines for an Album," "Friendship," and "Memory," as well as many unattributed pieces; the volume also includes several attributed pieces including poems by Joanna Baillie, Geoge Gordon, Lord Byron, and Reginald Heber. The volume is illustrated with a pen and ink drawing of a man, a pencil drawing of a dog's head, and several pasted-in engravings of various people and scenes. The volume also contains one page with 28 locks of hair stitched onto the page; each lock of hair is labeled with a name, and, in some cases, a date, of Corry's family and friends. The volume is bound in contemporary quarter red roan with faded blue-gray sides, with some damage to the spine and one loose page laid into the volume.

A manuscript commonplace book, with text written in several different hands. The volume is written mostly in English but also contains French and German; though no country of origin is identified, it appears to be mainly British in subject. The text includes seven pages of index in the beginning of the volume; there are also rough drawings in pencil and pen, as well more finely executed pen and ink illustrations. The text covers an extraordinary range of subjects, including technical inventions and developments, animal husbandry, recipes, political comment, sports, current events, travel, medicinal cures, economics, wine, and many other topics. The volume is bound in late 18th century three-quarter calf gilt, red edges, with some wear to the binding.

There is an autograph note on the inside front cover: "This book was given to me by Lady Abercomby, Lady Dysarts oldest friend at Adelaide House, St Leonards."

Part 1 is a verse miscellany of 206 pages which includes 52 poems by John Donne, 11 poems by Thomas Carew, 10 poems by Richard Corbett, and 11 poems by or attributed to Robert Herrick; the poems dating up to ca. 1637. Part 2 is a verse miscellany which includes 59 poems by Donne; dates to ca. 1620-1633.
