A manuscript copy of the court proceedings in the 1637 case "R v Hampden, 3 Howell State Trials, 825," in which Buckinghamshire gentleman landowner John Hampden refused to pay ship money levied by Charles I. The case was finally heard by all 12 judges in the Court of Exchequer Chamber; Hampden lost the case, seven judges to five. This copy is in a modern binding with marbled covers; on spine: "Parliamentary Papers. M.S.," spine is damaged and fragile; with modern pencil autograph notes on verso of first page.

Chiefly correspondence and documents covering the routine business affairs of the Northern Neck Proprietary, including survey warrants issued by several agents to the country surveyors (1722-1760); county rental returns (1721-1780), and letters, office records and memoranda of Robert "King" Carter, Sir William Fairfax, George William Fairfax, and Thomas Bryan Martin. Included are Robert Carter's letterbook (1720-1721), land grants in the Northern Neck counties, and survey warrants to George Washington (1749-1752).

Frederick Kesler papers

A collection of 184 items from 1852 to 1898; it consists of correspondence and journals relating to Frederick Kesler and his duties as a master millwright and bishop of the 16th Ward, as well as financial papers and newspaper clippings. Correspondents in the collection include John M. Bernhisel, George Reynolds, Joseph F. Smith, and Brigham Young. A major portion of the correspondence and manuscripts relate to the divorce between Frederick Kesler and Jane Elizabeth Pratt Kesler and Abigail Dow Snow Kesler. The material covers the reasons for the divorces as well as the financial compensation they would receive from Kesler per the instructions of Brigham Young. The 58 journals written by Frederick Kesler primarily contain notes on mills, tithing records and receipts for expenditures in the ward. A journal written by Alexander Ott includes the names of and provisions provided to Mormon immigrants.
