The first bibliography was intended as an aid to researchers working at the Burndy Library, and the second as a listing of then-recent books and periodical articles, to be used to support research and to develop library collections in the history of science in the United States. Also includes a three-page cover letter written by Smith to Bern Dibner, dated 1977, August 22.

Notes on the history of electrical science: typescript of book

Copy of 51-page typescript of book written by Lyle D. Feisel and two pages of correspondence between Feisel and Bern Dibner. The typescript concerns the history of electrical science and includes chapters on the work of scientists including William Gilbert, Otto von Guericke, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Augustin Coulomb, Luigi Galvani, Alessandro Volta, Hans Christian Oersted, André-Marie Ampère, Georg Ohm, Michael Faraday, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Wilhelm Weber, and James Clerk Maxwell. In a letter written by Feisel to Dibner enclosing the typescript and dated 1972, February 28, Feisel mentions earlier correspondence between the two and describes the Notes, thanking Dibner for his interest in the history of electrical science. In a letter written in response dated 1972, March 7, Dibner mentions a list of publications on the history of electricity and magnetism and invites Feisel to join the Society for the History of Technology.

Herbert McLean Evans letters to Bern Dibner

Manuscripts

Three letters written by Herbert McLean to Bern Dibner. In one letter, dated 1954, November 24, Evans proposes that Dibner print a catalogue of 289 works that Evans and his colleagues at the University of California-Berkeley Institute of Experimental Biology have deemed "the chief works or classics in the history of science." In a letter dated 1955, June 18, Evans mentions a shipment of Burndy Library duplicates. An undated letter is a social invitation to Dibner. Also included is a photograph of Bern Dibner and Herbert Evans, taken at Evans's home and dated November, 1952; the photograph includes a handwritten caption by Evans on verso dated 1952, November 16.

Sydney Ross typescripts and letter to Bern Dibner

Manuscripts

Six typescripts, one periodical with an article, and one letter written by Sydney Ross and sent to Bern Dibner. The collection contains three versions of Faraday Consults the Scholars, a lecture given by Ross at the Burndy Library in 1957; HM 83202 and HM 83202 a typescript versions of the talk from 1957 and 1960, and HM 83204 is a typescript of the author's prepublication edition of Faraday Consults the Scholars: The Origin of the Terms of Electrochemistry. Materials also include a typed letter from Ross to Bern Dibner dated 1958, December 9; three typescripts by Ross on various topics in the history of science; and an issue of Rensselaer Research, Summer, 1958, with an article by Ross.

Electrical technology in the 19th century: the electrochemical cell and the electromagnet: typescript draft of article

Copy of typescript of the first of a series of three articles by W. James King that would be published by the Smithsonian Institution in 1962 as the three-volume bulletin entitled The Development of Electrical Technology in the 19th Century. The typescript contains editorial marks, and includes an Introductory Statement declaring the purpose of the series to be "to provide some convenient landmarks in the development of electrical technology in the 19th century." The typescript discusses the early research of Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta in the late 1700s, and focuses on the development of the electrochemical cell and the electromagnet, devices instrumental in the invention of electric motors in the mid-19th century. Also includes a one-page letter written by King to Bern Dibner responding to a letter from Dibner and inviting Dibner to visit the Niels Bohr Library for the History of Physics.

Manuscripts

Letter written by Gordon D. Friedlander to Bern Dibner, plus accompanying essay. The one-page typed letter requests that Dibner review an enclosed essay on André-Marie Ampère for publication in the IEEE Spectrum. The enclosure is a copy of a 22-page typescript that has been corrected; the typescript includes illustrations and reproductions of handwritten letters.
