Robert Newell collection of biographical materials, including his 1868 diary

The volume includes transcripts of material about Robert Newell and the Nez Percé War of 1877. This material includes Newell's 1868 diary of his trip to Washington D.C. with several Nez Percé Indians including Lawyer, Jason, and Timothy, to negotiate a treaty. While in Washington, the group met with President Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, and the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Nathaniel G. Taylor. The diary also covers their overland trip back to Fort Lapwai, Idaho. There is also a typescript of a clipping regarding the unveiling of a bronze tablet dedicated to Robert Newell in 1931. Also present in the volume are typescripts of articles from the Lewiston Teller Extra from June 16-August 12, 1877, discussing the Nez Percé War

Comp. 1795 (K-D 356): different edition but same press and date; the Larpent copy is apparently earlier, as some of the MS corrections are printed in the K-D copy; it contains songs not in K-D copy, and a different cast.

Electus Backus diary

The diary (48 pages), which covers November 23, 1851-April 18, 1852, details Backus's experience as commander of Fort Defiance, Arizona, and particularly the army's interactions with the Navajo, the Hopi, and the Apache Indians, including the Indians coming to the fort to trade and buy supplies, Backus's relationships with various Navajo chiefs, and failed treaty negotiations with the Navajo by Edwin Sumner and Territorial Governor James S. Calhoun. Backus also describes his frustration with late supply shipments, his fear that his troops will starve, and the various problems brought on with the winter weather including the death of cattle and horses. Backus also mentions gold and "jewel" mines in the area

Microfilm of the diaries of John Bushman, covering 1871-1923. The diaries chronicle Bushman's life in Utah and Arizona, and include references to Church activities, news and visits to family and acquaintances, agricultural work, and Bushman's colonization activities in Arizona. The first reel also contains a combination autobiography and diary covering the years 1843-1926, and which references the Black Hawk War, settlements in Arizona, and Indian affairs in Utah.
