Catalogue of books in the dressing room Hartwell

    Manuscripts

Manuscript note on flyleaf by John Lee dated 1845; front cover penned with contemporary manuscript title "Catalogue of books in the dressing room," lower margin of front wrapper frayed with some loss of paper, spine worn but sound. This manuscript library catalogue of the books in the "dressing room" at Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire was prepared in 1787 for the then owner Sir William Lee (1726-1799). A note penned on the flyleaf dated 1845 signed by the antiquary John Lee (1783-1866) who inherited the property in 1827 on the death of Revd. Sir George Lee (1767- 1827) reads: "Found at Hartwell. This catalogue was probably made by Sir William Lee in 1787 or by someone by his order as the additions appear to be in his handwriting. One or two of the additions appear to be in the writing of the Revd Sir George Lee." More than 450 titles are listed in headings divided by subject and size, with the majority of books relating to medicine, natural history and philosophy. Several pages of additions appear to have been penned in 1791.
