Myron Hunt Papers

The collection consists of papers dealing chiefly with the work of Myron Hunt and Virginia Pease Hunt with philanthropic and civic organizations in Pasadena, California, from 1917-1946. There are also two sketchbooks by Myron Hunt (1894) and thirteen journals (1893-1913) of his first wife, Harriette Boardman Hunt, written from Europe, Evanston, North Carolina, and Pasadena and Palm Springs, California, from 1893-1913. While some of the materials concern the life and architectural work of Myron Hunt, quantitatively, the collection is weighted toward the story of Pasadena from 1903 to 1946. The collection also contains sub-groups consisting of the papers of Myron Hunt's son, Robert Nichols Hunt, and of the Boardman and Nichols families. Some of the philanthropic organizations in which Myron and Virginia Pease Hunt were active are represented in the collection. These include: California Junior Republic, Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena Army & Navy League, Pasadena Association, and the Pasadena Block-Aid Committee. Persons represented in the collection include: Myron Hunt, Virginia Pease Hunt, Henry A. Boardman, Robert Nichols Hunt, Harriette Boardman Hunt, and New Mexico author Paul Horgan (a friend of Robert Nichols Hunt). Some notable items in the collection include: Boardman, Henry Augustus. The collections consist primarily of letters from various American and British authors to James Fields, mostly relating to publication of their manuscripts by his firm Ticknor and Fields and in The Atlantic monthly. The collection, and especially the addenda, also includes letters to Annie Fields concerning literary matters. There are also poems, manuscripts, and correspondence by and about the following individuals: Thomas Aldrich, Charlotte Cushman, Charles Dickens, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jessie Benton Frémont, Edward Everett Hale, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Julia Ward Howe, Helen Hunt Jackson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Lucy Larcom, Sara Jane Clarke Lippincott (better known by her pen name Grace Greenwood), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Helena Modjeska, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Celia Thaxter, Booker T. Washington and John Greenleaf Whittier. The collection also contains essays, notes, speeches, notebooks, photographs, and articles. The collections chiefly deal with the activities of Ticknor and Fields, as well as Fields' and his wife's own literary efforts. The following authors are subjects in the collections: Robert Burns, Lord Byron, John Milton and Percy Shelley. Presidential items in this collection include John Adams autograph bill for legal services to Thomas Pratt, 1767 October 14 (FI 5102) and two autograph letters signed from William H. Taft to Annie Adams Fields, 1914 February? and 1914 March 10 (FI 4098, FI 4099).

Hunt-Tupper collection

The collection consists primarily of letters between William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) and John Lucas Tupper (approximately 1823-1879). The correspondence spans the entire life of their acquaintance, beginning in 1848 and ending with Tupper's death in 1879. Subject matter covers a wide range of topics, including descriptions of Hunt's journeys to Palestine, his quarrels with Thomas Woolner, his response to the death of Thomas Combe, his everyday ordeals as a painter, his struggles to create various paintings, his and Tupper's views on Pre-Raphaelite principles, and their differing opinions on politics and other topics. The collection also includes one autograph poem by William Holman Hunt, and seven letters Hunt wrote to Annie Amelia French Tupper. Additional correspondents in the collection are: Marion Edith Waugh Hunt (10 letters to Annie Amelia French Tupper); Gladys Mulock Holman Hunt (one letter to Mary Tupper); and George Tupper (one letter to William Holman Hunt). There are a few pieces of ephemera related to William Holman Hunt including a catalog of an exhibition of his works at Leicester Galleries, London, 1906.
