This collection is divided into two main parts, both arranged chronologically: Documents and Correspondence. Both series relate to the Wiley Gold Mining Company. James Thompson's name or signature appears on a majority of the documents. The documents include stock certificates, indentures, mining claim agreements, certificates of location and labor, company by-laws, warranty deeds, and receipts between various members of the company, and they are drawn in Lida, Nevada; Kansas City, Missouri; and Phoenix, Arizona. With documents that contain more than one date, the date of signature is used in cataloging. The correspondence includes business letters between employees of the company, as well as letters from officers of the company to potential investors. This document lists the twenty-three articles of the constitution of the Vineyard Mining Company, dated 1849, attested and signed by Edward Crocker and Frederick Pease. Following the constitution are minutes from various meetings of the company, from 1850-1851, the first of which took place at the home of William H. Munroe, in Edgartown, Massachusetts. The Company appears to have been formed prior to departure for California, where it intends to base its operations. They will embark aboard the ship Sarah, captained by John O. Morse.
