Northwest Territory celebration letters

Description: These 57 printed letters chronicle the daily experiences of the group of 36 reenactors who traveled from Ipswich, Massachusetts, to Marietta, Ohio, by ox-driven Conestoga wagons and a self-made flatboat in 1937 to 1938 to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Northwest Territory. They are addressed to Mrs. L. H. Kremer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who was a subscriber. The letters contain an illustration ink stamp and an illustration by party member Milo Scott; the illustrations depict scenes of the journey and pioneer life. Each letter was folded, addressed, and sealed with wax in the style of 18th century post.

Geological and geographical atlas of Colorado and portions of adjacent territory

"This Atlas is composed of two series of maps: the first, of four sheets, on a scale of twelve miles to one inch, each covering the whole State of Colorado; the second, of twelve sheets (six topographical and six geological, of identical areas,) on a scale of four miles to one inch, each sheet embracing two and one-half degrees of Longitude and one and one-quarter degrees of Latitude, the whole presenting the results of the field work of 1873, '74, '75, and '76, covering the entire State of Colorado and adjacent portions of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. ... The work of Primary Triangulation was carried on by J. T. Gardner, from 1873 to the Autumn of 1875, and was completed by A. D. Wilson. The preparation of the colored sheets and the general supervision of their publication was entrusted to W. H. Holmes"--From leaf [2], signed F. V. Hayden.

Anonymous letter concerning Idaho Territory gold rush

This letter documents the rush of gold seekers to a new discovery in the upper reaches of Idaho Territory. Having reached Fort Laramie (a frequent stopping point for all overlanders), the author offers considerable commentary about rumored clashes with Indigenous peoples. The letter is addressed to H. C. Hanna (the author's uncle) and signed with initials only: "T.L.D."

Kirk family papers

Manuscripts

The material includes one manuscript, one document and 16 pieces of ephemera; the majority of the collection consists of family letters, notes, cards and invitations between members of the Kirk, Inskeep, and Ridgway families. The most noteworthy of these are the letters written by Joshua Paul Kirk, in 1862, detailing his experiences in the Civil War. The other family members include: Ephraim Inskeep, Mary Olden Inskeep, Elias Kirk, Joshua Paul Kirk, Marietta Ridgway Kirk, Morris Paul Kirk, Marietta Kirk Ragland, Ephraim Inskeep Ridgway, Mary Ridgway, and William Olden Ridgway. There are also letters to and from various friends and assorted family members.

Appareil à Gaz: manuscript, letter, diagram, and note

Manuscripts

One five-page manuscript entitled Appareil à Gaz describing an illuminating gas plant, plus one diagram of the gas works and a letter (two pages), written by Lankez? to Monsieur Banuel? from Metz, France, and dated 1819. The manuscript includes emendations and marginalia, and the diagram covers both pages of a 30 x 43 cm folded sheet that contains calculations and a brief annotation on verso. Also includes one sealed note with text, "appareil pour la production du gaz à éclairage, No. 11."
