Description: An account of traveling overland by car and trailer to Taos, New Mexico, by four women in 1939 (Esther, Mary Ellen, Bev, and Pat). They left Philadelphia mid-July and the journalistic account continues until their departure from Taos on August 30. Their trailer (named "Tuck") was "6' x 12' built of plywood and covered with duck canvas." Quite a bit of the account in Taos relates their experiences with Taos artists Dorothy Brett, Bert Geer Phillips, and Red Dancer (Juan Mirabal).This draft was submitted to Coronet Magazine in 1940, but was not published. The illustrations, done by Mahan, include drawings of the women's car and trailer, Pike's Peak, interior scenes, Taos Plaza, women in Taos, the pueblos and ranches.

"When Taos Pueblo, his first book, was published in 1930, Ansel Adams was just 28 ... Adams had only recently put aside a nascent career as a concert pianist to pursue photography full time, but he still wasn't sure he could make a go of it when he took up the Taos project in collaboration with Mary Austin, a popular novelist and nature writer based in Santa Fe. ... The twelve photos in Taos Pueblo--each an original print on silver bromide paper prepared especially for the book by Adam's San Francisco custom-paper supplier, William Dassonville--include several formal portraits reminiscent of Edward Curtis and nearly circumscribed, almost intimate landscapes that are a far cry from the inflated magnificence associated with Adam's later work. ... The collection contains manuscripts by Henry Ellsworth Wood, letters written by various authors, photographs, negatives, ephemera, an assay book, and photograph albums and scrapbooks. The collection spans several generations of the Wood family, focusing on the personal life and business activities of Henry Ellsworth Wood. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, including some 300 pieces from Henry Ellsworth Wood to his wife, Belle Matteson McGinnis Wood. These letters, composed over the fifty year period of their marriage, cover a wide range of aspects of their lives, including their immediate and extended family, their day-to-day activities, trips to visit family and friends, financial hardships, mining affairs in Colorado and Canada, and assorted business activities. Four generations of the Wood family are represented in the correspondence, including 69 letters composed between 1853 and 1856 by William Cowper Wood, his parents and siblings. The collection includes various drafts of Henry Ellsworth Wood's reminiscences of his childhood and early days in Leadville, the most comprehensive manuscript of this type being "I Remember." Also of note is the manuscript "Colorado in 1868," reproduced with commentary by Henry Ellsworth Wood from a notebook kept by his father, William Cowper Wood, during the 1868 John Wesley Powell expedition. The collection contains one assay book kept by Maurice Hayes between the years 1873 and 1878. Maurice Hayes arrived at Leadville no later than 1873, serving as one of the first assayers in the area and many early Leadville notables are entered in this record book. There are also several scrapbooks and photograph albums, approximately 1868 to approximately 1921.

Taos Valley Irrigation Project Materials

This group contains two reports on the Taos Valley Irrigation Project in New Mexico, prepared by Parker N. Black for Alexander Gusdorf. The first contains a physical description of Gusdorf's New Mexico property and its development prospects, while the second volume consists of topographical maps and photographs of the area. Also included is a handwritten financial report on the project, water permit applications sent from Vernon L. Sullivan to Abraham Lincoln Fellows, and a variety of printed matter (1908-1909) related to farming and mining in New Mexico.
