Fred E. Foster collection

Group of three letter books relating to the work of Fred E. Foster, an independent commercial agent in Shanghai from 1863-1866, and agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company in Yokohama and Hong Kong from 1878-1882. Plus manuscript journal of the sailing ship St James' voyage under Master Burnham from New York to Hong Kong via San Francisco and Shanghai as well as the return journey via England, dated 1891-1892. The log book may not be in Foster's hand. The letter books reflect Foster's work with mercantile firms in the United States, England, and Europe and their commercial interests in Asia. Letters touch on topics including the acquisition of land leases; performance and compensation for consular services; market changes; buying and selling of goods; Foster's personal activities; everyday life in Asia; day-to-day company operations; and shipping concerns. Correspondents include international mercantile representatives; the PMSSC's presidents, D.S. Babcock and J.B. Houston; and employees of the PMSSC in San Francisco and other cities in Asia.

Thos. Foster his Book, 1779-1785

The largest portion of the manuscript consists of the diary that Thomas Foster kept from May 1782 through April of 1783, with individual entries dated Feb. 15 1782, and end of July 1781. The daily entries describe the weather, camp life, Foster?s duties and discuss war news and rumors, especially anxious expectations of peace.

Josiah Foster Flagg notebooks

The two notebooks contain engineering notes taken by Flagg while on trips through Argentina, Peru, and California in 1872 and 1874. In his notebooks, Flagg describes architecture, buildings, machinery, bridges, tunnels, railroads, mines, and other machines and structures that he observes on his journeys. The notebooks are illustrated with Flagg's sketches of these structures and machines as well as containing his descriptions of their design and construction. While in California, Flagg took notes on the San Francisco cable cars, on various mines and mining methods and particular on the New Almaden Mines. Flagg briefly mentions the people he meets during his journeys. Also included is a photograph of Josiah Foster Flagg.

Maria F. Watts letter to "Mrs. Foster,"

Maria Watts thanks the otherwise unidentified Mrs. Foster for her visit, and offers advice for her possible move to the California town of Oakland, including details concerning the purchase of property. She advises Mrs. Foster not to delay, for she believes the price of land will increase sharply in the very near future.
