    Benjamin Rush forwards Samuel Meredith (1741-1817), the Treasurer of the United States, his reply to "Mr. Underwood's letter" reporting that "as yet, we had had none of the usual forerunners of the yellow fever" and recommending that the city streets be washed "two of three times a week during the hot months."

    Charles Frederick Holder letter to John Vance Chaney

    Letter written from Charles F. Holder in Pasadena to John Vance Chaney, the head of the San Francisco Public Library. Holder writes that he has been delayed in getting back to San Francisco because of the "Tournament of Roses" given by his Hunt Club. He also asks Chaney if he has heard anything about "the Overland" (probably The Overland Monthly magazine), which he had been trying to acquire, and praises a newspaper man named Field of the San Francisco Chronicle.

    Edmund Randolph letter to Ogden Hoffman

    Randolph writes of abolitionists and supporters of slavery, and asks that Hoffman "will lend me your aid in procuring the support of the latter." He asks Hoffman to contact Senator Phelps of San Francisco, whom Randolph describes as "a man of influence."

    John Milton Bernhisel letter to Franklin Pierce

    Manuscripts

    Letter to President Franklin Pierce from John Milton Bernhisel, written while he was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bernhisel writes to Pierce of public opinion in Utah, particularly regarding the Territory's desire to retain Brigham Young as governor. Bernhisel praises Young, noting that he possesses "the entire confidence of the people." He continues that "respecting Governor Young I would...refer your Excellency to...Stephen A. Douglas of the United States Senate." Bernhisel continues that Utah would like to see Zerubbabel Snow kept as Associate Judge, and that Seth M. Blair remain as United States Attorney for the district of Utah, and mentions Blair's original recommendation from Sam Houston. The letter is unsigned and appears incomplete.
