    Manuscripts

This collection primarily consists of letters to and from Nathaniel S. Wheeler at various duty posts such as Fort Craig, New Mexico, and Fort Lyon, Colorado. Wheeler's wife, Nellie F. Stanley, writes mostly about daily and family life in Enfield, New Hampshire. Out west, Wheeler writes about his health, the weather, conditions of the trail, and encampment. In a letter dated September 28, 1867, Wheeler describes a congressional committee to meet tribal leaders of local indigenous people at Fort Larned, Kansas. He writes about chasing and hunting buffalo. The remainder of the letters are from friends and family writing from various locations in the United States. William Langley Seran writes about farming in Kansas and J.A. Mitchell from Memphis, Tennessee, complains about working conditions and his cattle being thin. There is an undated notebook consisting of a list of purchased goods.
