This an extra-illustrated volume containing letters by notable French authors. There is often an engraving of the writer, as well as an English transcription of the letter. The authors include: Adèle Hugo, Eugène Sue, Victorien Sardou, Guy de Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas (the younger), Alphonse Daudet, Gustave Flaubert, Comtesse de Genlis, Gyp, and François Guizot. There is also a one-page manuscript by Alexandre Dumas (the younger).

These five manuscripts deal largely with mining practices in California. HM 16583 is a letter to Fray Vicente de Mora, dated March 14, 1775, and is undersigned by several missionaries. HM 16584 (May 29, 1775) contains instructions regarding a decree regulating the prices of goods such as silver and gold. HM 16585-16587 (dated July 26 and November 17, 1780 and March 1, 1781) are letters to Joaquín Cañete that discuss details of mining.

In this manuscript, Fairchild tells the story of a hanging he witnessed in San Andreas, California in 1850. Fairchild remembers that a Chilean miner, named Joaquin, who had stabbed a man, was first tried and then hung by a vigilance committee. Fairchild also talks about life in the camp including crime, mining, and competition with other miners.

This is a 17th century copy of a manuscript by Valentin Boltz. The complete title is: "A limning boock, or a book setting forth of lively colours shewing how all sortes of colours are to be made and prepared, necessary and usefull for clarks, painters, and limners and well wishers to the art of painting or limning. Annexed thereunto some new artificiall experiments, never yet published in print." On the title page the author's name reads: "Valentine Poltzen von Rufach."

Letter written by François Arago to James Silk Buckingham. Arago wrote the letter from Paris in his capacity as secretary of the Académie Royale des Sciences, Institutes de France, addressing Buckingham as the Commandent de Buckingham, Paris. The letter regards Buckingham's published prospectus for a voyage around the world, Esquisse d'un Plan de Voyage autour du Monde par la Route des Indes, de la Chine, du Japon et des îles de l'Océan Pacifique: Ayant pour but les Intérêts Combinés des Découvertes, de la Civilisation et du Commerce. The letter is in French. A second page of writing consists of Buckingham's address.
