Dennis Searles letter to Carrie Searles

The letter, which was written by Dennis Searles in San Francisco and addressed to his sister Carrie, discusses the Searles' mines and a mill that they are building. Dennis mentions that John "left for the mines about three weeks ago," and was doing well. Dennis also talks about their frustration in business and their recent purchases of new mining equipment. Dennis signed the letter "John and Dennis Searles."

Israel Mitchell manuscripts

Four of these five manuscripts were written by Israel Mitchell. These include a speech about agriculture, a manuscript on religion, science and astronomy and two items about slavery. Of the latter two items, the first is a poem written circa 1860 against the institution of slavery, which mentions the abolitionist John Brown. The other is a handwritten copy of a speech Mitchell gave before the Oregon legislature in 1857 regarding both slavery and the Oregon constitution; Mitchell is arguing that Oregon should enter the United States as a free state. He also talks about abolitionists and the United States constitution. The fifth item is a group of notes on Mitchell family genealogy (with mention of Mitchell's grand-uncle Daniel Boone).

Edgar Jacob letters to family

Four of these letters are written by Edgar Jacob (1883) to his family back in England. His letters were written from Rimouski, Québec, Iowa, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Tejon Ranch and Bakersfield, California. In his letters from Salt Lake City Edgar describes the city, talks about the Mormons and the building of their Tabernacle. Edgar also discusses Americans, their customs and religion. His last letter was written while visiting his brother Augustus at Bakersfield and the Tejon Ranch region (after he had taken up ranching). Edgar talks about ranch life, the sheep, the Indians living near the ranch and General Edward Beale. The three letters by Augustus Jacob (1873-1874) were written to his father and sister Edith from San Francisco and Laguna Ranch, California. He talks about the people he meets, life in California and the sights he sees. He also writes in great detail about ranch life and sheep raising in California and his trip from Jamaica to San Francisco.

H.M. Goodwin letter to Mary Cooper

This letter is written by H. M. Goodwin, a woman living in San Diego, California, to her friend Mary Cooper. In the letter she discusses politics in both San Diego and the United States in general, stating that "in my opinion a woman can do anything, and we'd best elect one President of these not too United States." Goodwin also talks about dressmaking as both she and Cooper make dresses.
