    Certificates of cattle branding

    These four manuscripts are certificates of cattle branding granted by Los Angeles County to Andrés Pico (HM 35257, 1851, January 10), Cornelio Bernabel Serrano (HM 35258, 1854, July 19), Petronila Olivas Talamantes (HM 35259, 1854, September 5), and Ignacio María Alvarado (HM 35260, dated 1858, January 9). All are certified copies, and all include drawings of the brand and marks.

    William H. Gilbert diaries

    Manuscripts

    William H. Gilbert's United States Christian Commission diaries covering the periods from May 24 to July 4, 1864 (HM 82594), October 20 to December 17, 1864 (HM 82595), and January 24 to October 19, 1865 (HM 82596). The notebooks contain notes that Gilbert made in the process of discharging his duties with the U. S. Christian Commission. The last notebook also contains notes for the final report that Gilbert was required to submit at the end of his commission, a list of "letters written," expenses, memorandum of the members of 1841 graduating class, and a tally of collections for the Bible Society. Gilbert's notes describe hospitals, barracks, camps, and schools in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, including contraband camps and "colored" schools; prayer meetings, funerals, temperance meetings, and sermons, conversations with soldiers, officers, hospital chaplains, surgeons, Confederate prisoners, civilians, ministers, fellow agents, contrabands (fugitive slaves), notes for letters written on behalf of wounded soldiers; copies of Gilbert's letters to the U. S. Christian Commission members and fellow agents, records of books, clothes, and foodstuffs distributed and needed; expenses, etc.

    The three political letters are contemporary copies and include: HM 82758, a letter dated 1660/61, January 8, written from Whitehall and includes signatures of, among others, Edward Hyde, Dorchester, and Albemarle; HM 82759, a letter dated 1660/61, January 22, written from Whitehall and includes signatures of, among others, Edward Hyde, Albemarle, and Southampton; HM 82760, a note to Francis Newport..., the 1660/61, January 22 letter & signatures, a 1660/61, March 4 letter & signatures, and "In the year 1665 a General insurrection was intended by the Presbiterians..."

    George W. Hoffman letters to Dr. Guy Phelps

    Manuscripts

    In these letters, written to Dr. Guy Rowland Phelps, founder of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, Hoffman sends insurance applications "of young adventurers to California, young men of good habits, good constitution and after their fortunes. The insurance is for the benefit of relatives and Brothers who have assisted or in whole furnished the outfit." (1849, December 21 - HM 82384). He later sends deposits for policies of Benjamin C. Griswold and William W. Ware, en route to California, "via Cincinnati to New Orleans, thence to Chagres and Panama. In returning probably by the same route..." (1850, January 18 - HM 82385).
