    John Hollingshead letters

    Manuscripts

    A collection containing letters, manuscripts, and ephemera related to John Hollingshead. The letters are mostly addressed to John Hollingshead from 1860 to 1891, concerning the management of the Gaiety Theatre. The material in this collection was originally mounted in two volumes and was later removed by Huntington staff; the material still retains some glue and evidence of removal. Some items in the collection were trimmed down, with loss of text, by the original owner. Correspondents in the collection include, among others, Dion Boucicault, John B. Buckstone, Wilkie Collins, George Eliot, Charles W. Dilke, William S. Gilbert, Henry Irving, Blanchard Jerrold, Ellen Kean, Francis Knollys, James Macaulay, Florence Marryat, Westland Marston, Charles Mathews, James R. Planché, Charles Reade, Eyre Massey Shaw, Alexander Strahan, Algernon Swinburne, Anthony Trollope, James Whistler, Oscar Wilde, and Edmund Yates.

    Regimental orderly book contains general orders of Gen. John Sullivan, brigade orders, advertisements, and regimental details. The book covers operations from the beginning of the expedition in late July to its completion in October, including the order congratulating the army on "the reduction of the five Indian nations."

    Box 1 HM 83502: Page family album. This scrapbook documents the Page family history from Connecticut to Pasadena, California in 1887. The contents of the scrapbook include: clippings regarding Connecticut and Pasadena social and religious activities, invitations to functions, correspondence, photographs, postcards, and pamphlets pasted in. There is a telegram from Booker T. Washington where he kindly declines Cornelia B. Page's invitation to visit Pasadena, California. The earliest item in this scrapbook was a letter written by Samuel Malty Page to his "Grandmother" in 1843. The latest clipping reports the death of Emily B. Page in 1916. Note: This scrapbook is fragile.
