    Mary Austin manuscripts and letters to Louis Untermeyer

    This collection contains five letters to Louis Untermeyer from Mary Austin and typewritten carbon copies of "Hymns of the Penitentes," an essay about the Indian Penitente group of New Mexico and their chants and hymns (HM 41060), and "Rimas Infantiles of New Mexico," an essay on the cradle songs of New Mexico (HM 41061), with corrections in ink by the author. The letters, dated June 24, 1930 (HM 41062); July 18, 1930 (HM 41063); September 10, 1930 (HM 41064); October 19, 1930 (HM 41065); and November 12, 1930 (HM 41066), primarily discuss Native American and Southwest poetry and songs, prompted by Untermeyer's work on a projected anthology of Indian verse.

    Manuscript speeches by Rodney L. Tabor

    Two of Tabor's speeches are on the subject of temperance and are addressed to the Dashaways (July 1862 & Sept. 20, 1863). A third speech is an opening address at the annual commencement of the San Francisco College (Nov. 28, 1862). The fourth speech is on the subject of California and San Francisco's growth since the discovery of gold (1862-1863?)

    Mary Richardson travel diaries

    Manuscripts

    Collection of four diaries kept by Mary Richardson, a cousin of English critic and artist John Ruskin, documenting travel primarily in France and Italy, between 1833 and 1841, with the Ruskin family, including John Ruskin. Richardson often describes the sites they visited, her perceptions, and the daily activities of the family during their tours of Europe. The volumes consist of a diary of travel chiefly in Italy, from May-September 1833 (HM 41910); a diary of travel chiefly in France from June 4-August 25, 1835 (HM 41911); a diary of travel in Rome and Naples from December 22, 1840, to March 11, 1841 (HM 41912); and a diary of travel in Italy from March 14-June 23, 1841 (HM 41913). The collection also contains one additional volume: a diary and appointment book of an unidentified individual, presumably a young man, in London, England, in 1849 (HM 41914).

    The collection consists of H.H. Beauchamp's Journals with typewritten transcriptions for the years 1870-1907, in which he wrote extensively about family matters, as well as, his travels, often pasting in photos, newspaper clippings and other printed material about the places he visited; the collection also includes letters written by Beauchamp, mainly to his wife, Elizabeth Lassetter Beauchamp, and other family members. A second major part of the collection is the Elizabeth Mary, Countess Russell, Address book, correspondence, with one letter by George Moore, ephemera and manuscripts, which consist of two typewritten copies and printed proof sheets of her novel, "Mr. Skeffington."

    Mary Hallock Foote papers

    Manuscripts

    The Mary Hallock Foote papers consist of forty letters and one manuscript sent by Foote to Century Magazine from 1886 through approximately 1902. The letters, some of which are addressed to Richard Watson Gilder, are mostly about publishing her own work, although a few discuss the struggle to unionize mines, especially in Idaho. The manuscript included is the short story "The Rapture of Hetty." Also included are one letter from Clarence Buel to Gilder and one letter from Gilder to Mr. Carey.
