George S. Patton letters to Eleanor Banning Macfarland and John Cobb Macfarland

Two letters from General George S. Patton (1885-1945) to his cousin Eleanor Banning Macfarland and her husband John Cobb Macfarland. The letter to Eleanor is dated October 21, 1918, and was written while Patton was recovering from a leg wound he received in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive during World War I. Patton congratulates Eleanor on the birth of her daughter, Anne Banning Macfarland Brown (who had been born in July), sends his best wishes to various relatives, and notes that "I will be out [of the hospital] in a week or so...and can get back in the show and have some fun" (Patton returned to duty on October 28 but saw no further action before the armistice of November 11). The letter to John Macfarland is dated October 8, 1940. Patton thanks Macfarland for his congratulations (probably on Patton's promotion to brigadier general on October 2). Patton writes that "if and when" the United States entered World War II, he hopes he will "have the guts to put my theories of personal leadership into action." He further notes that he feels that he is "better situated to be killed than most as I have had out of life about all there is to get." He also comments on missing the recently deceased Eleanor, who was "very like a sister" to him.

    A small group of letters consisting of two letters by General George S. Patton to Lieutenant Colonel Charles R. Codman, and one to General Fox Conner, discussing military progress in Europe. The letter to Conner is dated Dec. 17, 1944, and the letters to Codman July 21, 1945 and August 18, 1945. In his letter to General Conner, Patton discusses, in general terms, the launching of the Ardennes Offensive and the opening of what eventually became known as the Battle of Ardennes or the Battle of the Bulge.

The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts, receipts, tax documents, estate papers, maps, photographs, ephemera, etc. There is some General George S. Patton related material in the collection; most of which is in the Anne Wilson Patton series (finance documents). Box 42 contains correspondence by General George S. Patton (photocopies), his wife Beatrice, and their children. There is some information amongst the real estate-related papers about racial restrictions in the San Gabriel Valley. Also included is material on Arvin Harrington Brown, his family and their property in Arizona. There is a large series of letters written by Arvin Harrington Brown, Jr., to his parents while he was serving in World War II. The "Miscellaneous" series contains similar material to the first two series including financial documents, abstracts of title, real estate information, deeds, maps, and some information about General George S. Patton. The oversize items contain tract maps of southern California. The Receipts & Vouchers Binder 11 is missing or was never received, and two boxes of material from the Brown Family series were returned to the family and one photograph album transferred to the Rare Book Department as Album 98, Volume II, April 1976 (Volume I is in the Shorb papers).

    The Banning Family Collection of Photographs, Part II, 1814-1979, consists of 1204 photographs and 23 photographs albums. The three most substantial categories of images in this collection are views of Santa Catalina Island; Banning family properties and residences in southern California; and portraits of family members and relatives. Of special significance are the Catalina photographs documenting the development of the island from a natural enclave with a few inhabitants to a thriving tourist resort. Volume 7 in the Family Album section contains images of the devastating effects of the Catalina fire of 1915. Also of particular interest are photographs of the George S. Patton family.
