Frost wrote this letter to author Carolyn Wells from his home in Pasadena, California. In the last part of the letter, Frost responds to a question about whether he ever sketched Walt Whitman by saying "No, I never made a drawing of Walt Whitman. I wish I had. I regard him as a humbug, a poser, a self advertiser."

George Forby letter to Elizabeth Dowd Forby

In this letter to his wife, Forby describes his journey to California via Cuba and Panama. He witnessed two burials at sea during his voyage, and called Panama "the most singular place I ever saw." Of San Francisco, he writes "you never saw such a set of long faces and idle people as there are here," owing to the decline in mining. Nevertheless, Forby is determined to stay and "try to face it through."

Jervis Joslin letter to D.A. Smally

Letter from Jervis Joslin in Denver to his brother-in-law D.A. Smally. Joslin writes that business has been "dull," but that work is about to begin on a railroad connected to the Union Pacific at Cheyenne, Dakota Territory (Wyoming), which might lead to the creation of more jobs. He also writes that Colorado is "producing more gold than ever before" and of the opening of new mines on the Cimarron River in New Mexico. He concludes that his expenses have been reasonable and that he is optimistic about the future, writing "I believe the chances are better for a young man here than in any place I know."

Letters to Seid Back Jr

Three letters from students thanking Chinese-American businessman Seid Back Jr. for hosting them on a summer boat trip from San Francisco, as well as a letter to Back from police Detective Sergeant H.H. Hawley in Portland, Oregon. The three student letters to Back, all dated 1916, include one from K. Young, who notes "I haven't seen any of our Chinese friends and merchants to [sic] treated our boys as you"; one from K.H. Chiu of the Chinese Students' Christian Association who notes that many of the students Back hosted have already gone back to work or summer school, and asks him to keep a university pennant as a memento of "your Christian brother Chiu and 'California'"; and one from Stephen Mark, who writes from onboard the S.S. "T.C. Walker" that the summer class session has emptied his savings and "I am dead broke, knowing hardly [if] I am to return to college...as each year comes I find it much more difficult to work and study at the same time," and notes that several Chinese students are leaving Berkeley but will probably be replaced with others, although "the requirements are so strict here that many a one finds it necessary to transfer to some other university in order to graduate in due time." The letter from Sergeant Hawley is dated 1913 and asks Back for a contribution toward a dinner for the "poor unfortunate girls" in the Home of the Good Sheppard.

Robert Selden Garnett letters

These are two letters written by American officer Robert Selden Garnett. HM 46544, dated 1849, August 23, is addressed to A. Somervail Garnett ("My dear Somervail," Robert writes), and is written following the wrecking of the ship Edith off the California coast. Robert assures Somervail that he will do all he can to keep Somervail enrolled at Harvard until his education is completed, and gives Somervail advice concerning his chosen occupational path, particularly the importance of mathematics and surveying. Robert urges Somervail to be steadfast in his studies, but not at the expense of his social life, which Robert considers as important as school. Robert closes by saying he hopes to return to Washington by December 1. In the second letter (HM 46545, dated 1849, September 30), Robert writes to Caleb Lyon concerning the authorship of a proposed "seal or coat of arms for the new state of California" as well as a constitution for the pending state. Robert claims to be the sketcher of the original seal, and gives Lyon the authority to reveal him as such, should he deem it proper.

David P. McCafferty letter to Alexander Pogo, 1893-

In this letter dated August 14, 1966, Florida Bible College student, David P. McCafferty asks Alexander Pogo about a verse in Job 26: 7. He inquires, "I would like to know if there has ever been any place in the north as being empty. Some secular College students will say "where is north"? It seems they just want to argue with everything a Bible College student has to say."
