Francis Nicholson proclamations

Recipient copies of two proclamations issued by Virginia Governor Francis Nicholson in July 1701. Nicholson’s proclamation on July 7, 1701, announces the launch of the proceedings of the Commission to settle the land claims in Pamunkey Neck and the south side of the Blackwater swamp, arising from the 1677 petitions of the Pamunkey Indians. The commission was to begin its work on the fourth Wednesday of July (July 20), and was expected to present its findings to the governor on August 6, 1701. On verso: proclamation of July 13, 1701, instructs the militia forces in all counties to arm themselves, in response to the intelligence of the French fleet under the command of Jean-Baptiste Ducasse heading to the Spanish West Indies. Paper seal affixed and signed by Francis Nicholson. With handwritten transcript.
