Description: This manuscript is a hand-written chart of thermometer readings at Fort Yuma, California, for the dates June 1 through August 31, 1853. Readings were taken each day at sunrise, 9 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Daily and monthly means were also calculated and entered. Facsimile from loaned original.

Eric Bergland plan of Fort Yuma

This manuscript, attributed to Bergland but not signed by him, is a pencil drawing done by hand of the arrangement of the various buildings of Fort Yuma, for purposes of the Wheeler Survey. Included are approximate measurements of the buildings and of the spaces between. Dated 1876, March 15-20.

Roll and minute book of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers

This roll and minute book of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers belonged to Camp Arrowhead, in San Bernardino County, California. The majority of the entries were from the early 1960s. This volume includes each member by name, along with registration numbers, husband's initials, and months at which they were present in DUP meetings. Recorded in the minutes were announcements, discussions, financial reports, and motions of the meetings. In addition to usual business matters, history lessons and readings about pioneer history were common throughout the ledger. Highlights in this volume were visits from long-time president of DUP, Kate B. Carter. In one meeting on January 25, 1961, Carter discussed plans for the promotion of new camps in the area and methods for continued research and preservation of America's western heritage.

HM 81548: The first volume, written in ink, consists of miscellaneous reports prepared by Frank West. The volume begins with a report about a transportation march from Camp Supply, Indian Territory to Fort Clark, Texas in 1873. West meticulously details the journey of the cavalry including length of travel, rivers crossed, and personal remarks. "Our wagon was [?] in the quick sand at the crossing of the Red River men were disseminated and applied to ropes attached to the wagon and it was drawn out" (p. 2). The total distance of their march was 1,371 miles, which took 74 days. The next two reports are about the murder of Jacob Dilsey in 1873. Other reports include number of utility poles erected in Arizona and confidential statements and endorsements about various Army personnel. Also included are briefs from Fort Niobrara, Nebraska and Fort Myer, Virginia. The last portion of the volume appears to be excerpts from a history book concerning Europe, Asia, and the Middle East during the 19th century. The endpapers have miscellaneous notes and account information written on them.

Sir Francis Henry Evans letter to Isaac Sherman

This letter concerns the American presidential election of 1876 and the implications for the United States in the international bond market of Samuel J. Tilden's presumed victory in that election. Evans writes, "I trust Mr. Tilden will feel advisability of still further reducing the interest on the govt loans there is no reason why more than 4% should be paid - if the proper means were taken to please the public and meet this requirement." Although Democratic Party candidate Tilden eventually lost the Electoral College vote to his Republican opponent, Rutherford B. Hayes, that decision had not yet been made at the time of this letter. Also referenced is the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway: "...high dividends in time of bad trade are generally ominous and the P + R seem fairly to have rushed to destruction."
